about
This song explores the fear of open water. The underlying theme is open to interpretation, the song was written to blend the fearful thoughts of being lost at sea with it being used as a metaphor for thoughts of day-to-day life.
The songwriting was focused on telling a story, portraying the calm before the storm and as the panic slowly sets in. This builds up to eventually become a sense of peace, although a different kind from at the beginning, as the end of the song is about coming to terms with a fate that is out of your control. This nicely bookends the story, with a journey that culminates in an almost "full circle" feeling.
lyrics
Drag me into the deep end
No questions, no answers
Losing my grip, I'm being pulled away from the shore
There is no choice, just succumb
Fighting the tides, out of my depth
I will not die here, this is not where I belong
The abyss is swallowing me
I am losing breath
The salt burns my lungs
The air tears my skin
Could this be my reluctant end?
The current may wash me away
As I dissolve into the blue
The shore seems so distant now
No searchlights will find me
I am slowly losing control
Drifting further from land, I now float with the breeze
There is nothing left
No hope that someone will save me
Get in the fucking sea
Get in the fucking sea
I feel my consciousness slipping away
You never know what's beneath these waves
You never know, you never know
God I hope they find me, although I won't look the same
Blue lips, bloodshot eyes and a pale face
I am beyond recognition
The current has washed me away
My body is one with the blue
The shore is so distant now
No searchlights will ever find me
